The grounds at Bulland House extend to roughly 2 acres of woodland, ponds, lawns and a small Apple and Plum Orchard. The garden has been neglected for many years, with little more than minimal maintenance taking place.
Since we came here in 2006 we have, with the help of several gardeners, removed much of the tangled undergrowth, pruned trees and felled dead limbs. The ponds (2) are still to be restored, as is the very lower portion containing, we believe, a second spring, although it is quite hidden.
The Apple trees are basically 3 old Cornish varieties, Cornish Long Stem being one that has been identified. 2007's crop was very prolific, yielding over 700 kgs, but 2008 was not so good. However, there was enough to sell about 400kgs to Cornish Orchards and give them 100kgs to make our own Apple Juice. By sterilising the Apples, and just adding a small amount of Vitamin C, they gave us back 70 x 75cl bottles of delicious juice.
2009 has been a relatively poor yield, with only about 300kgs sold to Cornish Orchards, but we have had 120kgs made into Apple Juice for ours, and occasionally, our Guests, consumption.
Guests are welcome to enjoy this little haven, and share the space with numerous birds, rabbits, a fox, deer (male and female) and a badger.
An old greenhouse, and an even older detached small stone store complete the garden.
